Description: European dye plant yielding a brilliant yellow when combined with woad, a Saxon green is created. Leaves are arranged in a rosette of yellow green and are blushed with pink in cool weather.

In ancient Greece, students wore rosemary garlands in their hair while studying for exams because they believed rosemary would help improve their memory. In the Middle Ages, men and women placed rosemary sprigs under their pillows to ward off demons and prevent bad dreams.

                                      ROSEMARY
Seasoning for poultry, beef, fish butters bread and more. Has a piney aroma and dark green needle-like leaves. When used in facials or baths brews it refreshes and stimulates the skin. Has antibiotic and anti-fungal properties. Stimulates digestion. Rosemary hair rinses brighten dark hair. In medieval times it was burned to cleanse the altar. Add rosemary to love sachets or place under the bed and above the door to protect you from harm. Besides the historic uses, rosemary is best known for remembrance and friendship. At one time rosemary was in every wedding, and at funerals mourners tossed fresh sprigs into the grave as a sign that the dearly departed would not be forgotten. Even today rosemary signifies love, friendship and remembrance. Up north try planting rosemaries around your septic system; this gives a little more warmth to the root system.

Description:     A very hardy vigorous upright variety with narrow dark pine green leaves and bright blue flowers.   Very reliable and is perfect for cooking since it is not too resinous.  Use branches for cooking skewers and works well for bonsai and topiaries.

                  Rosemary Garlic Rub
INGREDIENTS:
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon kosher salt
3 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
8 cloves garlic, diced
1/3 cup olive oil

DIRECTIONS:
This is a wet rub and is great on chicken or pork, when using an indirect grilling method.
In a small bowl, mix black pepper, kosher salt, fresh rosemary, dried rosemary and garlic.
Gradually stir in enough olive oil to form a thick paste. Rub into desired meats before grilling.
You can also use this on (cut and par boiled 5 minutes ) potatoes.
Coat with mixture and place directly on medium high grill rack, turning every five minutes,
for about fifteen minutes, until tender."

A sprawling perennial plant yielding the best red dye from its extensive root system. It has been used since ancient times as a vegetable and red dye for leather, wool, cotton and silk. For dye prediction, the roots are harvested in the first year. The dye is fixed to the cloth with help of a mordant, most commonly alum.
Madders are used as food plants for the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Hummingbird hawk moth.

Description:     Shrubby evergreen with an unusual blue green fern-like foliage; makes a lovely landscape plant. During the middle ages it was added to exorcism mixes to offer protection against evil spells and to ward off the plague. An ancient symbol of sorrow, in Christian times it was nicknamed "Herb of Grace" for the grace given by God following repentance of ones sins. Historically, ointments were used to treat gout rheumatism and sprains. Do not take internally! Rue can cause photosensitivity when handle fresh. A favorite host to the swallowtail butterfly.

SAGE

Historically sage tea was used to gargle for sore throats and effective mouth-wash, makes a soothing astringent for after shave lotions and bath brews. Now a tea is made for holistic menopausal conditions.  An infusion brightens silver hair. In the middle ages sage was used in healing, bring long life and used in money spells.

                       HERBAL HONEY
Place a fresh washed leaf of your favorite herb in a small sterilized glass jar. Warm honey, and pour it over the herb leaf. Cap jar tightly, and allow about 24 hours for the flavor of the herb to permeate the honey. Serve as a sweetener for tea.
