treat or steam it and serve like asparagus. Add the leaves to
potpourri or herb pillows or to freshen a musty room. Leaves added
to the bath add scent and calm nerves. According to legend, the herb
took its name from an angel who revealed its virtues to a Monk
during a plague; it had been widely thought to give protection from
infection. Peasants would make necklaces out of the leaves for their
children to ward off evil spirits and witches.

During the middle ages, people believed it was the favorite plant of
the devil. This is not surprising, considering the many wild stories
told of this plant. Belladonna was said to be an ingredient in the
refreshments served at wild orgies at which women would then strip
off their clothes, dance, and throw themselves at eager men. Sorcerers and
witches would rub a lotion containing belladonna and monkshood into
their skin, believing that it would help them fly. TOXIC!
