Candy the stem for a special treat or steam it and serve like asparagus. Add the leaves to potpourri or herb pillows or to freshen a musty room. Leaves added to the bath add scent and calm nerves. According to legend, the herb took its name from an angel who revealed its virtues to a Monk during a plague; it had been widely thought to give protection from infection. Peasants would make necklaces out of the leaves for their children to ward off evil spirits and witches. Native Indians would make tonics to expel mucus.
