Yarrows are the mainstay in the sunny border garden, long blooming, excellent cut and dried flower, beloved by the butterfly, deer resistant, lacy aromatic foliage and drought tolerant once established.  
The history of yarrow is full of magical, symbolic and medicinal tradition. As a witch's herb in medieval times for invoking magic, it was later used to protect against such magic, but also having an astrological influence of Venus and was woven into bridal wreaths and added to love potions to guarantee love.
Yarrow was sewn up in flannel and put under the pillow to make the sleeper dream of her true love. Medicinally Shakers and Native American's included it in many treatments from hemorrhages, colds, fevers, facial astringent and digestive complaints, use today is discourage.
Named after Achilles some 3000 years ago during the Trojan War, he would packed his comrades wounds to stop bleeding. Now knowing to having alkaloid to clot blood faster and azulene to stop inflammation. The flowers yield a yellow dye with alum mordant for wool.

Description:     Iris like leaves similar to cattails but yellow green in color and very aromatic. Once used as a strewing herb on floors in churches. As people crunched the rushes underfoot, the fragrance was released. It was also on the ingredient list in Moses instructions to make an "ointment compound after the art of the apothecary" as a holy anointing oil (Exodus 30:25). Roots can be eaten raw or candied to soothe indigestion, coughs, headaches and flatulence. Leaves are used in American Indian purification rituals and historically used to dispel worms. Until the late 1960s it was found in hair and tooth powders as well as bitters, tonics and liqueurs. Roots are used as a fragrance fixative in potpourri. To use the plant for scenting linens, collect the rhizome in late fall and wash off the mud, chop up and dry well on screens, then place in little cotton muslin bags among you linens. It is also used in Asia to deter ants. Prefers compost rich soil.

Description:     Also known as tree onions; they produce clumps of bulblets at the top instead of seed. The bulblets fall over and produce more onion sets. It can be used the same as green onion; the leaves can be used instead of chives. The hollow leaves can be stuffed with herbed cream cheese.

Chives

The delicate, onion flavor of chive is a favorite topping for baked potato's with the wonderful green color and hollow leaves makes it a great choice for garnishing for soups, dips, and more.
There are several kinds of chive, common, mauve and garlic.
Each has a different flavor and different bloom times.
Mauve chive has a similar appearance to common chive, although its blossoms are pinker. Garlic chive, has a mild garlic flavor, and has flatter, thicker leaves. It also has beautiful white flowers that bloom during July and August attracting hummingbirds and butterflies.
You can take advantage of chive's current blossoming by using the flowers to make chive vinegar and as a garnish for chive cream cheese.
Use a bottle of white vinegar and add chive blossoms to it, let it stand for two weeks and strain the blossom out, it will turn the vinegar a pinkish purple color.
